So the story goes like this. I get a message on my Blackberry from set designer, Rachelle Scarfo, saying something along the lines of “want to model in a music video?” Most people would say hell yes. I spent an hour explaining to her why I shouldn’t be in the video. I can’t act, I can’t dance or gyrate, I’m not a model, I’m not thin and I like wearing clothes (most of the time), but I’ll do the make-up! Of course, they didn’t need my make-up services, damn!
Eventually I got on the horn with the director, Alon Isocianu, and explained all this again. Then he explained the concept. He asked if I knew who Floria Sigismondi was. Flashback to 15 years ago, a 13 year old Kat Von Pire watching Marilyn Manson’s music video for The Beautiful People and thus began my teenage love affair with photographer & director Floria Sigismondi. At 14, I saved up all my pennies to buy her first book of photography, Redemption. So yeah, I know who Floria Sigismondi is.
Really, he had me there. The video concept was dark, taking inspiration from Floria. The final product doesn’t touch a Sigismondi nightmare, but I can see the inspiration, especially on a last minute low budget.
The other bonus to my being on set, was meeting SPFX veteran, Randy Daudlin and his assistant Indiana. Randy’s been in the make-up biz for 20+ years and has published two SPFX how-to books (Hurt Em’ Reel Good & Reel Characters). Being the vampire nerd I am, I introduced myself to Randy and followed it up with a smooth “Soooo, you did the make-up for Blood & Donuts” and the flood gates opened. He told me all about doing director David Cronenberg’s make-up for that film, and about plenty of other productions he worked on. Super friendly awesome guy!
Did I mention I’m mouthless in the video? I’m the mouthless freakishly corseted gal. Fortunately I brought my other half along, as communication became difficult after Randy de-mouthed me. Steve was able to translate what my flailing arms, pointing & grunting meant. Bless him. And who would have thought all my teenage goth-wear would have come in handy! I packed a huge suitcase full of lace, leather & vinyl, and all three of us ‘model’ gals ended up wearing my digs. Future career as a stylist? Nah, I’ll stick to make-up.
Keep an eye on Alon Isocianu and Reactiv Pictures, they’ve just been nominated for an MMVA for Post Production of the year on Candy Coated Killahz video Neon Black.

Clearly I’m obsessed with HauteLook and Beyond the Rack, as I’m on them EVERY damn day. But lately, as you can see from my last two posts, they’ve had some amazing make-up deals.

HauteLook is having a crazy sale on LORAC products. Shadows, lipsticks, glosses, blush and more at $1.99-$2.99! It’s blowing my mind. I guess they’re getting rid of the last stock of some recently discontinued items & colours. Snag it up gals, they’re selling out fast!
There’s a 12 item LORAC limit. I stocked up on glosses (great for weddings!), and a couple shadows. Might go back and do a second order if there’s anything left. At those prices, I don’t even care if I’m not happy with the products.

I’m only about two weeks in to this Twittering business, but I think it’s safe to say I’m hooked. Don’t worry, I don’t tweet a million times a day. So follow me! Make-up, boobs, blood and horror…that’s my life, not necessarily in that order.
And thanks for all the questions/comments! I don’t respond to all of them, but I do read them all and love the compliments! You’re all total babes! I’ll try to answer all make-up related questions I haven’t already answered in the past.
And simply because my last couple of posts haven’t had nearly enough blood in them, or rather any, here’s a zombabe!
This is my gal pal & Durham Region Roller Derby babe, Sky Bomber! Her derby team walked in last year’s annual Toronto Zombie walk, and I got to mess her up a bit for it. We kept it super basic (think latex, scar material and blooooood) so she would still be comfortable and puuuuurdy.
One shot was taken in my kitchen and the good shot was taken by another derby babe & photog, Kate Rundle. I’m not sure how up to date it is, but you can check out some of her photography here: http://katerundle.carbonmade.com
Just a quick rundown of how we made this look happen. I kept the focus to one side of her face & neck. Starting with scar material (a liquid plastic) and working fast due to it’s quick dry time, I blobed spots on randomly that would later become sores. Then layers of liquid latex went over the whole area and over the scar material, using a hair drier to speed up the dry time between layers. Remember to let each layer dry!
When several layers had been built up, I took a sculpting tool with a pointed edge (but not sharp!) and went back to all those spots with the scar material and ripped them open peeling back the latex. This creates the areas that look like sores. I powdered down the latex so that it wouldn’t stick to itself with natural head & neck movements. Then you go in & colour it all! Add blood, and you’re golden.
I paled out her face & the rest of her neck a bit, adding in some blue veins & green/yellow mottling with an Illustrator Palette. Kept her eyes pin-up with black liner & lashes. She had some bloody handprints on her clothes, ripped fishnets & I did some leg wounds as well.
She looked rad, was still comfy and didn’t have to spend a ton of time on removal at the end of the day!
